Alliance Against Ortega
July 2007 | Risk SummaryThe two opposition parties - the Alianza Liberal Nicaraguense (ALN) and the Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (PLC) - announced on July 23 that they will form a 'strategic alliance' in congress to fight the 'authoritarianism' of President Daniel Ortega. Together, the ALN (with 22 seats) and the PLC (with 25 seats) hold a majority in the National Assembly, with 47 seats, compared with the 38 held by the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FMLN). We view the alliance as a positive development for Nicaragua's political risk as it will provide resistance against the more socialist policies proposed by Ortega.
