A Message For Zelaya

President Manuel Zelaya's chief bodyguard was shot and killed outside the president's residence in June, raising further questions about the state of violent crime in Honduras. No group claimed responsibility for the crime, but it is likely that a mafia group or a 'mara' gang was involved. The slaying appeared to be designed to send a message - as a statement from the president's office put it, the murder 'brings with it perverse intentions to destabilize the system of government'.
