The supreme electoral tribunal in June approved a proposal by the PCN party to hold the 2009 legislative and presidential elections on separate dates. President Tony Saca of the ruling Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (ARENA) supported the decision, adding that if the PCN and the PDC confined themselves to competing in the legislative elections rather than fielding candidates for the presidential elections this would 'ensure a straight fight for freedom between ARENA and the Communist Party'(the FMLN).
