BMI View: According to Ecuadorian Deputy Economy Minister Fausto Ortiz, the central government budget is expected to reach US$10bn in 2008, which will include US$1.7bn for public debt servicing. The strong fiscal performance in 2006 has allowed the public external debt load to continue its decline, bringing total external debt in Ecuador to 42.0% of GDP, down from 48.0% in 2005. We do, however, see external debt rising slightly in 2007 to 42.2% of GDP.
