Opposition Criticises Civil Code

Members of the opposition have accused Panamanian President Martín Torrijos of attempting to resurrect aspects of Panama's authoritarian past. Torrijos has sanctioned tough anti-crime measures after his Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) managed to push changes to Panama's civil code in congress. Opposition from the Partido Cambio Democrático (PCD) argue this has allowed the PRD too much power to clamp down on critics and stop anti-corruption investigations. Panama currently scores four out of four in the media freedom category of our long-term political risk ratings. Should these accusations turn out to be valid, however, we may be forced to downwardly revise
