China Out, Taiwan In

The Peoples Republic of China suspended ties with St. Lucia this month, in protest at the island state's resumption of ties with Taiwan. Taipei severed ties in 1997, when then Prime Minister Kenny Anthony switched recognition to Beijing after taking over power from John Compton of the United Workers Party (UWP). But with the re-election of Prime Minister Compton last year, the reversal was expected by many. Less expected, however, was that the decision would be made by the cabinet without Compton's approval, who, led by Foreign Minister Rufus Bousquet, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Taiwanese Foreign Minister James
