The high profile murder of Pakistani cricket coach Bob Woolmer has certainly not helped in unburdening Jamaica of its murderous reputation. The Jamaican government has taken several steps in an effort to reduce its country's murder rate, and succeeded in cutting it by 20% in 2006, albeit from the high figure of 1,680 in 2005. However, with over 300 murders already recorded this year, the Woolmer killing, and the uncertainty surrounding it, serves to highlight the difficulty the government faces in tackling violent crime on the island.
