Authoritarian Tendencies?
April 2007 | Ratings UpdateThe civic organisation Movement For Nicaragua says that President Daniel Ortega is failing to govern democratically, citing examples of 'authoritarian tendencies', ranging from verbal attacks on the media, to secrecy surrounding agreements with Venezuela and Iran. The latest poll shows that support for Ortega is still high, at 61%. In our view, Ortega's administration deserves credit for cutting government salaries and increasing funds for health and education, but the growing influence of Venezuela and Hugo Chavez could tilt Nicaragua towards
