While Néstor Kirchner - or his wife, Cristina Fernández - remains clear favourite to win the presidential election, there has been a worrying increase in mass public protests in regions around the country. Events took a turn for the worse in early April, as police killed a teacher taking part in a wage-related protest. Kirchner has condemned any police brutality and stressed the public's right to voice dissent, though with six months before the presidential vote, the risk of further destabilising
