Castro Condemns Biofuel Policy

Fidel Castro, in his first published article since his temporary relinquishment of power last year, has criticised George W Bush's new biofuel policy. The US government has signed an agreement with Brazil which will allow crops to be used to produce ethanol as fuel for automobiles, thus reducing America's dependence on foreign oil. The scathing article in the Communist Party daily, Granma, entitled 'More than 3 billion people of the world condemned to premature death by hunger and thirst' explains Castro's concerns that the surge in demand for corn will raise prices, having devastating consequences on the world's poorest people.
