Election Countdown

March 2007 | Ratings Update

The ruling Barbados Labour Party (BLP) has yet to announce the date for general elections, constitutionally due by 2008 at the latest. On the eve of the Cricket World Cup, we continue to believe that the government will take advantage of the 'feel-good' factor during the tournament, and announce an election date soon after. The expected timing of the vote puts the BLP as firm favourites to remain in power, especially if it manages to oversee a successful hosting of the competition. As such, we do not foresee a major change in our short-term political risk ratings.
