March 2007 | Ratings UpdateDespite the ongoing political eruption linking top rank politicians to the militia group Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC), we believe that Uribe's position is secure for now. That said, the ensuing scandal - which saw the resignation of Foreign Minister Maria Consuelo Araujo in February - is worryingly close to home. Gustavo Petro, leader of the opposition Polo Democrátivo Alternativo, has demanded that a new legislative election takes place. Much more significantly, this sentiment has been echoed by Marta Lucía Ramírez, a member of Uribe's first administration. Dissolution of congress remains a distant scenario, but with regional elections pencilled in for October, Uribe will be aware of the risks of a drawn-out, publicised affair.
