Dengue Disaster

The government has declared a state of emergency as the country reels from its worst ever outbreak of dengue fever. The disease has infected at least 15,000 people, though doctors suggest the actual figure could be as high as 150,000. Stemming the spread of the epidemic and raising money to treat victims of the disease is a priority of the government, and its success in these areas will be crucial in terms of public opinion ahead of the presidential elections in 2008. Currently, opposition candidate Fernando Lugo is generating a significant amount of publicity and a poorly handled crisis situation
