March 2007 | Risk SummaryThe principal economic threat to Montserrat is a resurgence of volcanic activity, similar to that which devastated the island in the recent past. As such, renewed signs of activity in the Soufrière Hills volcano, which left two-thirds of the island uninhabitable and destroyed the capital city Plymouth a decade ago, is cause for considerable concern. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory has recently observed the build up of a large lava dome atop the volcano, which could theoretically end up collapsing and dumping lava flows on nearby Old Towne and Salem.
