Miner Difficulties
February 2007 | Ratings UpdateA year into his first term, President Evo Morales is falling victim to the same tactics that he once employed as a member of the opposition. The latest dissatisfaction comes partly from the mining sector, from which thousands of employees took to the streets to protest a proposed increase in mining taxes, forcing the Morales government to back down. It comes also from thousands of protesters angry that the government has not gone far or fast enough in nationalising the energy sector. Amid the unrest, Morales' popularity ratings are sliding, which is not good news for a country that regularly
