Among the hottest political issues in Honduras is that of consumer petrol prices, which has had implications for consumer spending and inflation. President Manuel Zelaya has presided over a drop in prices of HNL8/litre, just shy of the HNL10/litre fall he promised in last year's election campaign, thanks to a combination of lower global prices and a renegotiation of fuel contracts with foreign energy firms. While the recent standoff with major oil companies resulted in the Honduran government backing down, Zelaya's administration will continue to win favour if it can keep pump prices
