Fernando Lugo, a Roman Catholic priest, announced on December 26 that he will put forward his candidacy for the presidential elections in 2008. While the government and the Catholic church have heavily criticised the priest's decision, Lugo enjoys considerable support among the poorer social classes. Also, opinion polls indicate that he is so far the most popular presidential candidate. Given that Lugo does not yet have any backing of a political party, he will face considerable challenges in becoming a political force that is capable of attaining the presidency.
