January 2007 | Macroeconomic ForecastsBMI View: The uptrend in consumer price inflation since the second half of 2006 still remains a cause for concern in 2007. After increasing for four successive months, headline inflation ended last year at a 13-month peak of 4.95% y-o-y, with higher-than expected monthly increments of 0.75% m-o-m and 0.76% m-o-m in November and December meaning that the year-end figure exceeded our forecast of 4.50%. While we believe that this recent uptick is worrying, it is too early to determine whether it will turn out to be a longer-term phenomenon.
