Deadlock Ahead?
January 2007 | Ratings UpdatePresident-elect Rafael Correa may marginally escape from a political deadlock when he is inaugurated on January 15. Lucio Gutierrez's party (Partido Social Patriotica) recently abandoned Álvaro Noboa's 'coalition' which was set up in order to block Correa's calls for a constituent assembly. The coalition, which is known as the 'anti-constituent' is sharply opposed to many of Correa's reforms and is seeking to curtail his political influence. Even though this development could give Correa more support in Congress, we are concerned that he may be politically constrained, which could affect the administrations policy making ability.
