January 2007 | Ratings UpdateLocal politicians believe that Mexico's controversial bill barring legislators to run consecutive terms could be lifted sooner rather than later. The ban was originally implemented to ensure fair elections and safeguard against corruption. However, we have long argued that the ban effectively makes state officials unaccountable to the electorate and reduces the incentive to pass legislation. While such a move would be encouraging, we are not holding our breath just yet. According to the latest opinion polls, a majority of the Mexican public would be opposed to the proposed changes.
