Correa Fumes

Relations between Colombia and Ecuador deteriorated in January, as Ecuador's President-elect Rafael Correa publicly criticised the government's anti-drug fumigation program. Correa has claimed that the program, which aims to decrease coca cultivation on Colombia's frontier, also damages legitimate crops and harms local residents on the Ecuadorian side of the border. Ecuador recalled its ambassador from Bogotá in protest and has asked for the fumigation to be halted immediately. Given their historically frosty relations, we believe that a resolution to this dispute in the short run may prove challenging.
