Cautious About US Assistance?

Following a three-day visit to Guyana at the end of October, US General John Croley criticised the government's lack of commitment to the Maritime Law Enforcement Agreement (MLEA), which the two countries had signed earlier in the year. The MLEA allows US maritime police to enter Guyana's waters in the pursuit of drugs and arms traffickers. While Guyana's hesitations over US operations in its territorial waters are understandable, we believe that the country is likely to benefit from US assistance in the fight against crime, which would increase Guyana's political stability and the country's appeal to foreign investors.
