December 2006 | Ratings Update

The election of leftist Rafael Correa has led us to revise our short-term political risk rating downward for Ecuador by two points. The rating reflects, in part, the smoothness of political succession and the capability of policy-making. We are concerned that should a prolonged political deadlock occur, due to a lack of support in Congress, Correa would be unable to purse the reforms included in his platform. This may well result in street protests, which would weigh on political stability. As such, we revised our rating downward by one point each in the categories of 'succession' and 'political
