The corruption trial against former President Luis Gonzales Macchi collapsed, after the court failed to sentence the defendant on 20 November, which was the deadline set for the final verdict of the trial. It remains unclear why the judges failed to convict the former president in time, who was accused of illicit enrichment and was facing a prison sentence of up to ten years. In our view, the breakdown of the court hearings is a reflection of Paraguay's weak judiciary system and high levels of corruption, which by implication has a negative impact on the government's policy making capacity and
