Elections: A Fragile New Dawn?
November 2006 | Political Risk AlertGuyana President Bharrat Jagdeo, running with the People's Progressive Party/Civic Party (PPPC), was re-elected on 28 August with a clear majority of the popular vote (54.6%). Surprisingly, the PPPC won a total of 36 of the 65 seats in parliament, which was more than the 32 seats that the North American Caribbean Teachers Association (NACTA) polls had suggested. Although there were some difficulties in the voting procedure - which led main opposition candidate Robert Corbin to accuse the ruling party of fraud
