Former President Augusto Pinochet was put under house arrest after Judge Alejandro Solis ordered his arrest in late October. Solis ordered the detention for 36 cases of kidnapping, one of homicide and 23 cases of torture at the Villa Grimaldi detention centre between 1974 and 1977. Nevertheless, Pinochet denied claims that he had been involved in what had happened. Whilst we are concerned that the foundations for such allegations may rest on weak evidence (as others have), we believe that this move indicates the strength and autonomy of Chile's judicial system.
