Carlos Rovira's party, the Frente Renovador (FR), lost Misiones' General Assembly elections on 29 October to the opposition, led by the Frente Unidos por la Dignidad. The local election received national attention, when Rovira stated before the vote that, if victorious, he would change Misiones' constitution to allow him indefinite re-election as governor. Considering that Rovira is a close political ally of President Nestor Kirchner, the national opposition is likely to exploit Rovira's defeat politically ahead of the presidential elections in October 2007.
