Senators Face Investigation

Three 'uribista' congressmen are being investigated by the supreme court over allegations of improper political and financial links with right wing paramilitary group Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC). Senators Jairo Merlano, Alvaro Garcia and deputy Erik Morris, who are all members of the ruling coalition, could face criminal charges after their names were discovered on a confiscated computer originally belonging to AUC leader Rodrigo Tovar. The episode has caused considerable embarrassment to the Uribe administration, and has also brought to light the significant inefficiencies in the Justice and Peace legislation.
