WTO Talks Stall

October 2006 | Risk Summary

According to Minister of Foreign Affairs Fred Mitchell, talks over the Bahamas accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) have frozen. There is much to be done to prepare the country for WTO membership and officials are doubtful that a new round of talks would be concluded before the end of the year. A major hurdle to clear is a public consultation process. Work is also needed in the area of public education. However, the foreign affairs minister said that the breakdown of the latest round of global trade talks is not expected to have much of an immediate impact on the Bahamas, which only has observer status at the WTO.
