A Budget For (Nearly) Everybody

The Bachelet government's 2007 budget contains the biggest rise in spending since 1990. Given the recent strikes in the health and education sector, the government appears to have responded to pressure, and will increase social spending by 11.2% in 2007. Expenditure for the health sector will include large investments in new hospitals and equipment, and the education sector will see university scholarships for ambitious secondary school students. Although next year's budget is aimed at a wide spectrum of society, it will be left to be seen whether certain groups, such as teachers and copper workers, who protested for higher wages,
