September 2006 | Ratings UpdateFollowing the national elections in September, which were considered the most orderly and peaceful in recent memory, our short-term political risk rating for Guyana has risen considerably, from 53.0 to 61.0. This reflects not just the re-election of Bharrat Jagdeo as president, which should ensure policy continuity, but also the surprising success of his People's Progressive Party/Civic Party (PPPC), which took 36 of the 65 seats in parliament, more than the original 32 estimated by polls. There are challenges ahead, to be sure - and our structural political rating remains basically the same this month at 51.7 - but matters
