September 2006 | Risk SummaryThe inauguration of President René Préval in May has brought the return of political normality and some semblance of stability to Haiti. He faces myriad challenges, the most pressing of which is the alleviation of poverty. Three-quarters of the country is impoverished, and half of the population live on less than a dollar a day (according to World Bank figures). Préval was the candidate of choice in February's election among Haiti's poorest citizens, and he will be expected to deliver results.
