Accusations Against Leading Candidate
September 2006 | Ratings UpdateWith time winding down until the elections in November, political rivals have been stepping up their efforts to discredit each other. A legislative commission has asked the public prosecutor's office to investigate claims that Eduardo Montealegre, the centre-right presidential candidate favoured by Washington, participated in a fraudulent banking operation when he held public office under ex president Arnoldo Alemán. If proven, the allegations would bar Montealegre, currently running a close second in the polls, from running.
