UCR In Trouble
September 2006 | Political OutlookOne of Argentina's main opposition parties, the UCR, held its annual convention in August. It was a rather chaotic affair, which did little to instil confidence that the party was capable of mounting a viable challenge to President Kirchner next October. Throughout the 20th century, the UCR (the Radicals) has been the traditional democratic counterweight to Peronist political dominance. The party has suffered two earlier periods of cataclysmic division, but each time it bounced back to vie for power once more. The question many ask now is whether the UCR can recover from its most recent meltdown.
