A new political landscape has been carved out between the left and the right. Indeed, looking at how the states swung in the Mexican presidential race, of the 32 voting areas (31 states and Mexico City), 16 went for López Obrador (AMLO) and 16 favoured Calderón - none gave the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI)'s Roberto Madrazo a majority.
