August 2006 | Ratings UpdateIn July, President Michelle Bachelet reaffirmed Chilean foreign policy independence and that she would not submit to US pressure to support Guatemala's campaign for the Latin American non-permanent seat on the United Nations' Security Council. An ill-judged intervention from US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld followed Bachelet's criticism of the Chilean ambassador in Caracas for declaring public support for Venezuela's rival bid. Bachelet is now in a tricky position, with her own coalition divided over which bid to support.
