Crime Rates Remain High

Despite government efforts to combat crime, criminal violence continues to dog El Salvador, affecting the investment climate as well as the overall political ambience. A recent poll shows that a majority of people would favour the reintroduction of the death penalty, although President Antonio Saca has publicly come out against the measure. We can expect more police to be put out on the streets, and increased pressure on congress to pass stronger laws. Tensions will continue between the police and the judiciary over sentencing practices.
