April 2006 | Macroeconomic ForecastsCoffee exports rose 21% y-o-y in March, mainly due to the cyclical swing in the harvest and a national fertilisation programme launched last year. However, the overall forecast for the season is down by 10% due to cold weather and a shortage of pickers, migrating over the border into El Salvador, where they can gain higher wages. Increasing illegal migration to the US also continues to undermine the labour supply for the coffee season.
