Pledge To Fight Crime
February 2006 | Ratings UpdatePresident Manuel Zelaya took office in late January promising to step up the fight against violent crime, poverty and corruption. The newly appointed security ministry, a serving general, immediately announced a restructuring of the prison service and the police force. Among other plans afoot is the creation of a new energy ministry, to control prices under pressure from world oil price hikes. The new government can hope for a brief honeymoon period, but having won the November elections by such a slim majority, the population will expect to see quick results from the incoming authorities.
