Zelaya Governs With Slight Majority

Manuel Zelaya of the opposition Liberal party takes office at the end of January as President elect, after his victory was confirmed late last year despite several weeks of uncertainty. Zelaya beat his rival, Porfirio Lobo Sosa of the governing National party, by 49.9% to 46.2%. With the third and fourth place candidates coming in with less than 2% of the vote, the elections once again consolidated the hold of the two main parties on the presidency. Turn-out was 46%.
