Election Chaos In Honduras

The candidate for the opposition Liberal party, Manuel Zelaya, was set to become the next president of Honduras, at the end of elections mired in accusations and uncertainty throughout the counting process. Mr Zelaya declared himself the winner shortly after the first votes were counted late on election night. The victory was confirmed by the head of the supreme electoral tribunal, himself a Liberal party member, the following day. The ruling National party immediately refused to concede, however, and president Ricardo Maduro said that he would not step down. As a crisis loomed, the head of a 114-strong observer mission
