At Loggerheads Again
June 2006 | Political Risk AnalysisRelations between the US and Venezuela continue on their downward spiral. President Chávez has referred to a co-ordinated US 'plan against Venezuela,' and alluded on several occasions to the possible threat of invasion. As with many of Chávez' pronouncements (usually aired on his weekly 'Aló, Presidente!' television slot), they are carefully crafted with a domestic audience in mind, and should be treated with a degree of scepticism. In early March, US Ambassador William Brownfield reiterated that the US 'had not invaded, is not invading and will not invade Venezuela'. That said, top Washington officials have repeatedly identified the Chávez administration
