Ecuador has elected a new Supreme Court, in a move that is hoped to bring greater stability to the country. An independent four-member committee, appointed in June, elected 29 men and two women to the positions, out of a pool of 165 candidates. It is over a year since former president Lucio Gutierrez dissolved the court and filled it with his own political allies – an act which led to his removal from power by Congress. The new appointments are also good news for the country’s foreign investment prospects, as investors have been deterred by uncertainties over the legal environment
