Kirchner Spreads His Wings
March 2006 | Political Risk AnalysisIn late February, President Kirchner won the first legislative battle since his decisive victory in the October elections. While Kirchner's primary threats in those elections were from within the Partido Justicialista (Peronist), and though he established his dominance within his party, he failed to win a majority of seats in the chamber of deputies. This created some uncertainty regarding his ability to pass controversial legislation. The judicial reform, which was supported by most of Duhalde's Peronismo Federal faction of the ruling party and five members of the opposition Unión Cívica Radical (UCR), leaves little doubt that Kirchner's command over the
