April 2006 | Political OutlookAt the end of March, the corruption scandal that has claimed many of Lula's close allies caught a big fish: then-finance minister Antônio Palocci. Palocci's fate had been in lingo for several months after allegations arose that he was involved in corruption while mayor of the town of Ribeirão Preto (between 1993 and 1996). Palocci's testimony before a congressional committee initially seemed to ease the intensity of the allegations against him, though this proved to be short-lived. Earlier this year, witnesses came forward testifying that they had repeatedly seen Palocci in a mansion in Brasília where the Partido dos Trabalhadores
