The Death Of The Dinosaurs

July 2006 | Ratings Update

The PRI is in need of a redesign after a damning electoral defeat. Preliminary results show that PRI candidate Madrazo won around 20% of the vote in the July 2 vote. The party, which ruled Mexico for 71 years until 2000, must now adapt if it is to have any chance of survival. During its seven decades in power, the PRI maintained its hold on power by doling out favours in return for support. Over the past six years, the PRI adapted its strategy, using its clout in Congress to consistently block Fox's reform agenda. We may now see the PRI taking a more constructive centrist role in Congress, forming coalitions with the PAN in order to share credit for reforms and regain some of its lost support. If it fails to do this we may witness the death of the PRI dinosaur.
