Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar addressed the nation in celebration of the 50th anniversary of T&T's independence in late August. After praising the country's achievements, the prime minister emphasized the need for continued improvements in several areas, highlighting the need for a more equitable distribution of wealth, a more effective education system, a two-pronged approach to fighting crime, which incorporates both mentoring in high-risk areas and better technology, and an impending infrastructure development programme. While these reforms would bolster the country's social stability, we are sceptical that such wide-ranging developments can be achieved during the remainder of Persad-Bissessar's term.
