Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner launched a new attack on the media and opponents of her government's policies at the opening of a household appliances factory on July 23. Wading into a public disagreement between two former central bank heads and Deputy Minister of Economy Axel Kicillof, Fernández chastised private economists and opposition leaders for participating in a "nationwide broadcast of fear and discouragement." Worsening economic conditions saw Fernández's approval rating fall to a 15-month low of 40.9% in May, according to pollster Management & Fit. Further erosion in popular support could prompt Fernández to take an even harder line against those in the media that criticize her policies.
