POLITICAL RISK - Immigration Tensions To Persist Tensions between the Dominican Republic (DomRep) and neighbouring Haiti are set to remain tense, following the resolution of a new migration law on June 1 which makes it harder for Haitians to live and work in the country. Pressure from NGOs and human rights groups has seen the authorities back down on specific areas of the new law, including a ban on foreign children enrolling in local schools. However, with Haitian economic recovery to remain precarious and unemployment in DomRep to remain elevated, we doubt that domestic frustration with the number of illegal Haitian immigrants will dissipate anytime soon.
