The opposition Partido Revolucionario Democrático and Partido Panameñista (PP) have formed an alliance against President Ricardo Martinelli's ruling Cambio Democrático (CD). When Martinelli first came to power, he had formed a coalition government with the PP, but since the coalition's breakdown in August 2011, has led government with a slim majority in the legislature. The opposition alliance has already won its first victory, forcing Martinelli to withdraw his proposal to sell part of the state's stake in Cable & Wireless Panama. As the 2014 election draws nearer, we expect to see rising tension between the new coalition and the government.
